Content Convergence: Come Together Write Now

Rahel Bailie’s recent article in Multilingual on content convergence, like a nautical compass, points to a new trend in content creation on the horizon. The wave of new open architecture and open standards such as TMX, XLIFF, DITA and text memory in localization software development is just a ripple indicative of the tide to come with the confluence of content.

No sooner had high tech heavyweights in the localization industry, such as Adobe, AOL, AppleCare, Cisco, eBay, HP, NetApp, PayPal, and Sun Microsystems, implemented their multilingual asset distribution solution (Idiom’s WorldServer) than it will soon be obsolete with its acquisition by a company who has indicated it does not plan to support that platform beyond a couple years.

As portability and cost savings drive this convergence, the value of content is becoming increasingly recognized, with content being viewed as a company’s treasure rather than a cost.

Bailie describes content convergence as single-sourcing cranked up a notch by lowering the silo walls dividing content genres, such as tech comm, marketing, and training content.

While any change to enterprise processes brings pain, the gain will be the newly acquired value of the work of content creators through a complete makeover.
